I've read that you can connect your Android phone to the HDMI port on a TV with a cord that is micro-USB at one end and HDMI at the other end. Do all Android phones have this ability?
I also heard that there is an new thing called MHL that is to connect devices to HDMI TVs. Is it true more and more Android phones and/or pads are going to have an MHL jack?
In other words are newer Android phones/tablets going to have MHL or will they just use micro-USB to HDMI?
Not sure about USB to HDMI, but I'd suspect that if your phone supports it, it will be in the specs.
MHL needs support at both ends, and is only a few years old, so it's only newer hardware can support it. That's why most cables have the adapter on them, to feed the MHL signal from a phone to a TV that doesn't support it.
My Bionic actually has a mini (micro?) HDMI port next to the USB port for plugging it directly into a monitor or TV. It's also used in a couple of the docks including my Lapdock.

My old Android X2 had the HDMI connection, but my RAZR-M does not. I connect it to the TV using the USB Charger cable connected to the USB port on the TV.
It would be great to connect the output of your smartphone to a TV, using HDMI, and use a wireless keyboard and mouse (or a wireless keyboard with a trackpad) as input...
Then you could turn your smartphone into a computer
I like the idea of having a computer that can be carried on my pants pocket, and used to make phone calls in the streets, but that can be converted to a regular computer with monitor, keyboard and mouse when I'm at home or at work....
specially if you also uses a wireless keyboard and mouse, or a wireless keyboard with a trackpad...
I have a Lapdock for my Bionic and it does just that. Uses the HDMI to connect the monitor, and has USB Ports so that I can plug in a keyboard and mouse. It's not as handy as a laptop, but it's good enough for browsing the web, or taking notes at a conference.
