I'm starting to use my HTC Incredible for banking - very handy - but I'm concerned about the latest crop of Android products carrying malware.

Has anyone tried any security products yet? Norton has a product in beta https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result and McAfee has WaveSecure https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result.

Thanks

https://www.mylookout.com/

I have had Lookout on my phone for a few months. It tells me "Everything's OK."

I don't really know any differently.

I've been using Norton and haven't noticed a hit on the system. It scans when the phone is idle and seems to be working great.

So far the malware has been repackaged into paid apps being shared as Warez. Get your apps from android market and you should be fine. If you are still worried get the app Antivirus Free.

I think if you are going to use Android apps, GOOG will offer some protection, but I would have a security app, for sure.

Is this the down side to having an un-curated App store?

More a result of OS popularity and people getting apps from unsanctioned sources. Jailbroken Iphones have had their day too.

Yes, unsanctioned apps are one thing, but I was thinking more of the increasing and recurrent malware apps that are present in Google's own app stores.

I read this last week for example: Google Removes More Malware from Android Market | News & Opinion | PCMag.com

Google created the kill switch last year when Android users were victimized, and I wonder if Google will become more of a curator in the future to stem this problem. Trojans like DroidDream are a sign of things to come when you have a market that is left open imo. Another interesting issue was that while DroidDream exploited vulnerabilities patched with Honeycomb, many Android phones were still vulnerable because the various vendors hadn't pushed updates to their users.

I think it may just be the nature of the mobile apps beast. Despite Apple's very closed app market, they have had the same kill switch since 2008. Well, I guess that means they pioneered the app 'snatch and grab' back door and Google copied them.

I think it points to the fact that Google needs to control its App store a bit more tightly. Apple is too controlling, and Google is too lax - there needs to be something in the middle ground.
