I have a phone with Android 2.3.7 but the latest is 4.x.
Is there anything specific I can't do with the older Android?
I have a problem with links to Instagram. They don't show the image but they show the comments. That might be because the Android is too old. I'm not going to upgrade soon.
The world is constantly telling us to upgrade and update everything. But a lot of people are still happy with Windows XP. But on some XP computers, you can't run Hulu videos, because XP can't run the newer IEs. Also certain features of Google-related sites don't work with the older IE.
More and more apps are leaving Android 2.## behind.

The main one that I wanted was the Time Warner Cable app which only supports Android 4.0 or higher. Certainly not a killer app, but I really wanted it. And now I have it.
Oh and the one that I considered must have, was pretty much the reason I HAD to have Jelly Bean: Google Now. I absolutely love that app.

I can see staying with XP, especially on a home computer, but for a phone it's really not practical to keep an old phone, when the new ones are so discounted for upgrades. I get a new one every two years and even the current RAZR X was only $99. It's so much better than the old X2. Speed is the main advantage, but also screen resolution, sound, camera quality.
The framework that is in 4.x+ supports all newer apps and other functions of the phone that were not available on older versions.
shmoov_groovzsd hit the nail on the head. Android's 4.x (Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, etc.) is too drastically different. Heck, even the hardware has become drastically different (e.g. phones have much more memory, and developers are taking advantage of that extra power). For what its worth, the user experience on the newer Android phones is WAY better than even the best days under 2.3.7.
It's akin to buying a game console. You own an equivalent of an old-school Playstation 2, and except for a few games that were jointly created for the Playstation 2 and 3, you can't play any Playstation 3 games. Obviously, games are much more enjoyable on the PS3 due to better graphics, more realism, etc. The "heft" that your Time Warner Cable app demands is too great for the software and hardware of your older Android phone.
