I heard on another forum that it was confirmed that she was not using an OEM charger.

wow this is insane didn't think this was possible. maybe if she had some sort of case or rubber cover on her phone that would have absorbed the shock a little bit. I actually got this new incipio case for my iphone off of phoneguru.com that im really happy with. protect yourselves people

Almost all batteries these days are Lithium Ion and actually have small chips in them to 'talk' to the phone. If this battery or charger was not OEM or faulty somehow, this could happen.
They are sort of smart batteries. Back in the day Lithium Ion batts were unstable and they used to use NiCad as they were more stable but drained rather quickly and heavier.
