To be precise, the Kies software backs up the stored data in the phone to the computer in the upgrade process and then restores it back to the phone in the final stage of installation.

You check for updates from within the phone settings itself. Always.
Now I believe the S2 DID just get an update but still... you should not have to do this from anywhere else but the phone.
//EDIT// The S2 INTERNATIONAL Edition got an update in China and Korea. Not here. But try the below anyway...

Find and press the settings button. It can be found together with your applications or in some cases on your homescreen.
Once there press the tab named about phone.
Towards the bottom of this screen press the software update tab.
A screen will pop up where you will have to confirm your choice.
Downloading a new version of Android can take some time depending on how big the upgrade is.
When it’s done your phone will restart and when it boots again you will be updated.
Just checked for software updates via your method and it says I'm up to date. I have Gingerbread OS on this phone and Jelly Bean is the newest.

Good! Then just ignore that text.

Keep in mind that the latest software releases won't always make it to your phone. Once a new version of Android ships, it has to be "approved" by the manufacturer, and then "approved" by the carrier for your phone, and then pushed out. It takes some time, and with older phones like the S2, will soon stop happening altogether.

I think you should try the Kies software the other guys mentioned. ATT released Jelly Bean for the S2 on June 10th.

That’s very cumbersome.

Compared to an automated over-the-air update, yes.

If an OTA was an option sure, but thats not reality with this device. First world problems, we know.

Or, do nothing at all. Simple and easy.

Have fun with your update OP!

True, but when it comes time for her to get her Galaxy S5, the software works like iTunes and restores everything to your new phone.
