My pay as you go Trac phone has been working fine during our area's land line outage but now when I dial on my cell phone, I get the message "emergency calls only"? Why?

Has your cellular account run out of money ? Are you traveling outside your local area ? Have you tried to power the phone off and back on ? Have you attempted to contact Trac phone from another phone ? Where are you ? Too many possibilities to say with any certainty.

Plenty of minutes, charged, same location, powered off and on again. No other phone available. This is in NM, the Land of Entrapment. Maybe I can find a website for Trac Phone. At least I have satellite Internet.

Thanks for the clarification. Could be a tower issue. If no other phone is available, do an internet search for Trac Phone and check your online options from there. Best of luck.

Wonder if the local tower is overloaded due to land line outage. Tracfone's website leaves much to be desired. Tried several times to use their tech support form to no avail. Posted on the general Tracfone forum and waiting for "approval of post".

Assuming you have a GSM model Tracfone, try removing and reinstalling the SIM card (usually, you have to remove the battery first) to be sure it's making good contact.

If that doesn't work, it's likely that the tower nearest to you is having problems or is off the air completely, and there's nothing you can do except wait it out.

I know that customer support is weak with services like Trac Phone and other prepaid carriers. If there is a major land-line outage it is likely that the cellular networks are being overwhelmed. Hope it gets corrected ASAP.

There is a very good change that SIM card may have unseated itself in the SIM tray or slot load. This is not totally uncommon.

As Skunk said, find your SIM ( if you have one) and try to clean it by rubbing the metal contact on jeans or shirt.

If you don't have a SIM card, simply try rebooting your device.

If that doesn't work there may be another issue with the device. The antenna may have disconnected.

Is your phone showing any reception (bars)?

You said you have plenty of minutes, but do you have plenty of time, as well? Tracfone minutes are only good for a certain amount of time. If you don't add more minutes/time before they expire, you lose them.

My Tracfone is a stand-by for emergencies and if I need to make an outgoing business call while out of the office (my customers don't get my personal cell number). Sometimes when I turn it on, it'll show 'emergencies only' for a few minutes until it connects to the network properly. Could also be that kind of thing, too, where it just can't get to the Tracfone network to verify your account.

That part is no longer true.
You will lose service until you buy more but the minutes will roll over.
In fact, if you exceeded the date to renew you also used to lose the number. That also no longer happens.
Ask me how I know
