With the most popular sites like Gmail or Facebook, on a smartphone, you can use either an app or go to their site inside the browser. With Gmail it is quite different between the two. I was wondering why they don't make the two things exactly the same.
Are there technical things that can only work in the app and not inside the browser? If so, what kinds of things are they?
With the browser, you know you're going to the latest version because you're accessing their site. But with an app, you have to update the app to the latest version - do some apps get updated automatically without you seeing it?
The app just allows the developers to deliver content in a way that perhaps a browser isnt able to do.
An app is just a static shell of virtually the same raw data that the browser gets. The difference is just in the formatting and layout for the most part.
Sometimes I prefer apps, and sometimes the browser. However, I don't want to fill up my tablet with apps that I won't use often. I use the browser for those situations.

OP, I think you're confusing terminology. They are both apps. One set of apps run in a web browser while the others run natively on the device. Currently, native apps run quicker on a device than apps that run in web browsers. As a result, the same level of experience may not be achievable across both platforms.
There are things that only work on native apps and not inside the browser. An example is push notification. However, the lines between the capabilities of a native app and web app are more blurred than ever.
Many apps update automatically.
