I prefer HTC over Samsung because HTC's hardware just looks and feels better-built.
For example, the HTC One feels like a precision-crafted tool, while the Galaxy S4 feels like a plastic toy in comparison.
I can get used to the button layout of whatever I'm using, and I can customize the on-screen icons and widgets to my preferences, so that's a much less important consideration than the overall quality of the unit.
HTC as a company is sinking fast. I actually prefer LGs, but Samsungs have become as pervasive as iPhones, which means compatibility is more guaranteed. Despite those battery-sucking but oh-so-pretty SAMOLED screens.

It is rather sad to see HTC struggling.
The reality is it's hard for any Android maker to turn a profit. It's doubly hard if that's their only business and they lack the huge marketing budgets of companies like Samsung and LG. Samsung can and has bought itself a dominant position in the Android space.
LG isn't even profitable, though as more people find out how good their battery life is compared to Samsung that might change. But they just don't have the marketing dollars or inertia Samsung does, and it's going to take a while to build it up. They're making the right moves at least.
Anyone remember back when there were these things called "carrier exclusives?" Nowadays you have to be on every carrier to succeed.

I have chargers in every room in my house, a charger in my office, a charger in my laptop bag, and a charger in my car that I got for $5 on Amazon. In the course of a normal work day, my phone is plugged in more often than not.
I will be picking up the Galaxy S5 when it is released.

People are clearly willing to tolerate reduced battery life for more features, but if the same features are available in a device that also gets decent battery life, why would people not want that? I can't think of any rational reason. Unfortunately, people buy whatever is marketed to them most heavily, not what is actually best.

Yeah, after all, there are days where one is out and about and can't tether themselves to the wall in order to keep going. Plus, while I can charge my phone at my desk, I prefer to keep it in my pocket since I'm not always AT my desk. And chargers will only charge so fast.
Incidentally, most LGs will charge at 2A, so they'll charge faster than most other phones, which are usually pulling somewhere between 1A and 2A. That helps quite a bit too.
Me, I need the battery life, there's enough times when I can't tether myself to the wall.
Incidentally, getting back to the original "button layout" question, that kind of shows how on-screen soft buttons can be an improvement. They can be made configurable so that the layout can be whatever the user prefers. But personally I think back should be on the left in a "back, home, menu/multitask" setup.
