HTC One, I have yet to find anything that will silence all alerts yet allow calls to ring during the night (want to be able to control the times. PIA to mute the phone when I go to bed, and remember to un-mute in the morning.

I sleep through most of it, but the other person is a light sleeper and complaining.

There are a ton of profile controlling apps. I use Sound Profile and think it is the most polished app. It does exactly what you are looking for.

HTC One supports NFC.

My personal solution (inexpensive) for similar is to have an NFC tag on side of my clock radio facing me. Using Trigger, I created a profile to turn off sound for most everything as I plug the phone in for the night, leaving phone and messages on vibrate only. All other sounds muted. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

In the morning I swipe it again, which puts volume and other stuff back where I need it for the day. Profiles are "Sleep" and "Wake", on the same tag.

Of course swiping tags is a manual process, thus fallible, and maybe instead you want something on a timer (or based on time of day).

While I haven't personally used it, appears to me that Tasker will do all that and much more. I know it has stuff based on time of day, and don't know about timers. If NFC chips weren't convenient for me...they are, since I only have about four different "states" of my phone that I need (wake, sleep, work, garage)...I'd take a close look at Tasker instead.

In fact I'd bet money apps like Tasker and the "smart" behaviors are the logical next step of our phones, via future built-in capabilities.

My Droid Bionic has SmartActions built in (I believe it's a Motorola app). It automatically disables all notifications after 11 PM, and only rings if certain numbers call.

Yea, SmartActions is only a Motorola app.
But yes there are at least 40 of these types of apps in the market.

A good search term is "Do Not Disturb".
This looks like a good one:

Yea, lot of folks (myself included) have been using similar apps for years. They really are nice. I'm currently using Smart Actions since I have a Motorola. Swiping my phone or using some external anything in my opinion is not a good solution. I don't have to do anything. Just plug it in.
