I have an Optimus G Pro and it also does amazingly well (I get 36 hours sometimes), despite having a larger screen. On the other hand, a Samsung Galaxy S4, with an extended 3000 mAh, will barely go 12 hours. Even with the screen off the thing will lose 5% of battery life per hour. On WiFI.

Given that LG's Nexus devices don't do nearly as well as the LG branded devices, I tend to think a lot of optimization is being done on the software side rather than hardware. With the Nexus devices LG is not allowed to do that, they have to be completely vanilla Android from Google, which means they can't really optimize even for Snapdragon/Krait, it's generic ARM instructions.

Qualcomm SOCs have insane low power during deep sleep, that might help too.

Galaxy s4 has poor battery life, Galaxy Note3 however, does a great job with a huge 5.7'' AMOLED screen and a merely 3200mAh battery. It's still uncertain how they did it.

Yeah but that Galaxy S4 has that same Qualcomm SOC...basically 95% of the Android phones in the US use them. So it's got to be a lack of software optimizations for that SOC in Samsung's case. Understandable, since in the rest of the world they use Exynos.
