Not sideloading and/or flashing ROMs wouldn't help here.

From the article:

Quote:
This is key to understanding that this threat doesn’t spread by simply browsing the Web, opening attachments, or even sideloading suspicious apps. The malware either ships with the device in question or is manually deployed by someone with physical access to an Android phone or tablet.

From the article:
Exactly. Mostly loaded on the phone before the consumer ever buys it. No apps, no problems!
But most people prefer to be sheeple and ignore these facts.

And most of these infected phones come from China. Not legitimate sources like, y'know Verizon or Sprint.

Again with the Facepalm? Dude. Seriously.
Verizon and Sprint get their phones form the manufacturers. This Maware is NOT on those phones. It is showing up on Chinese bootleg Android phones. There's an entire black market of cell phones in China. THese are the phones with the issues. NOT phones you get direct from your cell prodivder. Did you read the article?
Did you see this:

Now if this was happening on manufacturer direct phones, that US number would be SUBSTANTIALLY higher.

Right back atcha'....

You can believe what makes you feel better, but WHERE do you think Verizon and Sprint phones come from?? The USA?? Unless you go into the firmware of the device, you won't be able to find the external source for the adware.
Look at the IMEI label in or on the phone. It says china. I work in the telecommunications industry.

Unfortunately the pc boards aren't populated or the software loaded HERE in the U.S. nor are the Apps created or loaded by American engineers so tell me, just HOW do you THINK the manufacturing process works?
Bless me with YOUR knowledge?
Currently the ONLY AMERICAN built smartphones in the USA is built and programmed in Texas and is the Moto X and the Blackphone which is in NY. ....Next.
