I can't imagine why anyone would want one the size of an iPad.
I didn't used to understand it, either, until I started to need reading glasses. I don't like to wear my glasses all the time. I can read my phone's 6-inch screen without the glasses. I can't read a 4-inch screen without them.
The phone is just a hub. Larger size is great for surfing, reading documents, emailing, etc.
Bluetooth makes the size of the phone less relevant.
I have several Bluetooth headsets, and my car is Bluetooth capable.
I try to avoid holding the phone when talking, so I can take notes, drive, etc.

I would agree except that some sites are changing their web pages so they can't be zoomed in on. The washington post, for example, has ridiculously tiny fonts that can't be enlarged. I can't even read it on an iPad 2. The odd thing about that site, though, is that the iPhone version does have a way to increase font size. Are they going to take that ability away as phones become tablet sized? I miss when I could zoom in whenever I wanted to.
I see a pattern. Cellphones were big at first.....and then they became small, and now they are big again. I'm sure they will eventually become small again.
I think those smart-watches will eventually advance in technology and replace smartphones in the near future.
But to answer the question, I prefer bigger phones. I plan to sell my Nexus 4 and get either a Note 4 or Xperia Z3 before the end of the year.
Its nice to have a phablet that can kinda replace all you other devices (your smartphone, your tablet, your laptop, your mp3 player etc). All of that could be in one device. Thanks to Samsung for popularizing the phablet that all these other companies are starting to follow.
I am not a fan of this trend and I don't understand it. Currently owner of a 3.8" Ace 2 as main phone and find it a bit too large. Around 3.2" seems to be the sweet usability and portability spot for me.
Another bizarre thing is that the phones now marketed as "mini" versions have screens around 4-4.7". This is definitely not mini to me, but jumbo. My 5-year old Xperia X10 mini is actually mini in the correct sense of the word - with a 2.6" screen and very compact!
