Hi. I'm currently with AT&T and have an individual iPhone 5C plan. It's the Nation 450 minutes with Rollover and 5000 weeknight/weekend minutes. That's the smallest number of minutes they offer. The only other add-on I have on my plan is the unlimited data (I'm grandfathered in from a few years ago). I don't have any texting plan because everyone I know has an iPhone so I only iMessage. The 450 minutes cost $40/month and the data costs $30/month. I talk on the phone very little (no more than 150 minutes per month on average).
I want to reduce my monthly cellphone bill and I'm wondering if anyone has any negotiation tactics they could suggest for me when I call AT&T customer service. I don't really have the leverage of being able to cancel because my contract isn't up until October but in the meantime I'm willing to cut back on minutes if they can offer me a specialized change to my contract. Just don't know how best to approach asking this.
Threatening to quit is often the best tactic. But only do this if you are ready to follow through on your threats. The retentions department can give you some good deals.
First, Cell phone companies don't negotiate anymore. This is what it is, and if you don't like it you can leave.
Second, the only way they are going to give you a lower price is if you give up your unlimited data. People with grandfathered plans get 2 options: keep your plan, or get a new plan. Bye bye unlimited.
$70/month is actually a decent price for unlimited data. You can surely get cheaper but probably at a 1GB cap...
I think you need a prepaid service. Unless you are 65 years or older, I don't believe there is any lower plan. You could get rid of your data plan and cut your bill by almost 50%.
Check out Cricket prepaid. They have a $35/mo plan that includes unlimited text/talk and 2.5GB of data. It also uses AT&T's network for service so you could just keep using your current phone.
They're also offering a 10GB plan for $55 if you need more data which is still significantly cheaper than what you're paying AT&T.
You cannot run on iPhone on a major carrier without having a data plan. And seeing how he has unlimited, I'm guessing he wants to keep data.
Can you just use the phone feature (no data) on a discount service (Consumer Cellular, Cricket, etc) and then use the Iphone on wifi only? I know CC charge separate for phone and data.
Right now since Data is the fastest growing usage field for cell phones, that $30 a month plan for unlimited data is a good deal. If you don't need/use that much data and don't intend to in the future then switching data plans might be the only way to lower your monthly bill. Just remember that once you drop your grandfathered data plan you won't be able to get it back.
I've been using TING for 2 years now. Only way to roll. No contract and you pay by usage not some outrageous flat fee. My bill has never been over $50 and that's was with several thousand texts. Data doesn't count against you when you are on WiFi.
