Ok, I see what some people may want to use their Smart Phones for. But I'm just surprised that given how poor the economy is and how most people are struggling, that so many people would be willing to spend so much money on the data plan.
The economy is not poor, and most people are not struggling. Smartphones are low cost, you can go to some very poor countries and see people with smartphones everywhere. You seem to be applying your own individual circumstances to everyone, sorry, not everyone is in the same boat as you.

I'm sure most of you would like to drive a Ferrari, but can't afford one or can't justify the cost of one. I'm surprised it's not the same with smart phones for most people.
If $60 is too much for you, than it is, but I fail to see why you think this money would be too much for others. For many people, $60 is nothing.

My low cost carrier, Tmobile, has worked everywhere I have gone and lived with zero problems; where do you live? I have traveled back and forth, up and down across the US and have had zero issues with coverage. You must live in one of those rare places that have a coverage issue, which in this case, I do not see why you think everyone else has this same issue.
The answer is very simple once you get past all the back and forth.
Because people want them, and are willing to afford them.
Simple, no?

Or, if $60 is too much, you can simply opt for a cheaper plan. I'm not sure why the OP keeps harping on this $60 number when there are a bunch of cheaper plans that are perfectly usable and really what people should be getting unless they're doing a bunch of music streaming or watching videos. Even with only 2GB, I still managed to stream most days on my way home from work.
But the only way to get 2 data plans for $90 per month would be to switch to a carrier than gives terrible coverage where I live. No thanks. I don't want to downgrade my service just to say I have a smart phone.
Went to the Verizon site two flip phones, $50. Two smartphones with a gig of data, $80. Two gigs $90. Since the OP is an expert at wifi, a gig or two should be plenty.

The "issue" is not about $30 a month.
What do you mean that the issue is not about $30 a month?
Anyway, I called Verizon. They actually have a discount now for basic phones. With the discount, I'm now paying $20 per phone ($40 total) plus $5 for the plan, for a total of $45 plus tax per month.
However, for a smart phone, it would increase to $40 per phone ($80 total) plus $40 for the plan, for a total of $120 plus tax per month.
The difference is now $75 per month. No way am I getting a smart phone. That's a lot of money.
What I don't understand is, with WiFi being implemented almost everywhere, why do so many people waste money on smart phones?
Or, alternatively, if "everyone" (except me) has a smart phone, then why is WiFi being implemented almost everywhere?
I tried to negotiate a lower price with Verizon, but they refused and said they are not allowed to. Guess I'm staying with my basic phone.
The phones may be ridiculously cheap, but the monthly charges are absolutely ridiculous.
The typical charge for a plan for an iPhone user is only $40/month more. Since it's incredibly cheap, I don't think anyone even bats an eye at the cost.
