New Amazon Fire phone is available right now for $199 (includes 1 year of Prime) so it's actually $100. Are there other non-contract smartphones that are better and for under $100? Used is OK.

Having been locked into Amazon on my wife's Kindle Fire HDX (or more importantly, locked out of Google Play / Services), I wouldn't take one either.

If the Fire is to phones, what the Kindle Fire is to tablets, you couldn't pay me enough to have one as my phone.

My wife is sorta OK with her Kindle Fire, but plans to get a real tablet when the Fire dies.

Well, if you're just going to only live within the Amazon ecosystem AND are looking at unlocked phones, then I'd say yes. They lost me on the first assumption. Most people buy phones through the carrier. With Verizon you can get an HTC One (M8) for free or the LG G3 for $99. Both are better phones. Both are real Android phones.
It's a very good price on a mediocre phone that's crippled with software.

I'd take a blackberry before taking the Amazon Fire.

The Moto E is a way better device for $100 since it runs Android.

I totally bypassed all the Amazon devices as I only buy something from Amazon once or twice a year. I do however get as many free ebooks from Amazon as I can and use the Kindle app on my Android.

I have a Tracfone Android LG Ultimate 2 phone. It was $130 with 1200 minutes and 1 year of service. It seems to be a good phone. Tracfone can be a good deal for light cell phone users as the minutes are limited, but they do carry over forever.

Even Windows has more apps, and you can actually get a phone for $100. Hell, you can get one for $30 if you play your cards right.
