Last I checked you still couldn't use your phone on flights. Some do allow data usage but definitely no talking.
Curious when this will change over and allow full usage of cell phones on all flights. It "might" get annoying having the person next to you babble on and on about their new shoes but that comes with the territory I guess.
Their excuse in the past was fear of interference with airplane controls, etc but I don't think reason works anymore.
Not even sure it's possible actually. Maybe using WiFi calling but not using traditional cell service. Even a 4G hotspot built into a plan would need some type of connection to cell towers on the ground. Going 500+ mph would make that hard.
Actually, there are some select airlines that provide a method to connect to a plane-based system to allow cellular communications. Works similar to a cruise ship. The service is satellite based and the usage charges are not cheap.
It would drive me and others crazy to hear some fool jabbering away on a flight! Esp if it's the guy next to me. This would be the main reason for not allowing talking on a phone. Text if you must!
Please, please airlines, never allow inflight telephone calls.
I'm glad you can't talk in-flight and hopefully it will stay that way. On T-Mobiile with Wi-Fi calling you can text in-flight though. That's good enough.
they used to have landline fones built into the tray table in the 1990's.
