Southwestern Bell Corporation, which changed its name to SBC Communications in 1995, acquired Pacific Telesis in 1997, Southern New England Telephone Company in 1998, and Ameritech in 1999. In February 2005, SBC announced its plans to acquire former parent company AT&T Corp. for over $16 billion. SBC took on the AT&T name upon merger closure on November 18, 2005. SBC began trading as AT&T Inc. on December 1, 2005 but began re-branding as early as November 21. In 2006 AT&T Inc. purchased BellSouth.

In 1997, NYNEX was acquired by Bell Atlantic (taking the Bell Atlantic name), which later, in 2000, acquired GTE, the largest independent telephone company, and renamed itself Verizon. The Verizon and MCI merger closed on January 6, 2006.

US West merged with Qwest on June 30, 2000 and over time the US West brand was replaced by the Qwest brand. Qwest merged with CenturyLink on April 1, 2011 and the Qwest brand was replaced by the CenturyLink brand.

Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) only reproduces about 3.5 octaves, while the hearing range is closer to 10 octaves. If you play music through a telephone it tends to sound terrible.

As some people have pointed out POTS provides greater reliability than other telephony systems (mobile phone, VoIP, etc.). Many telephone service providers attempt to achieve dial-tone availability more than 99.999% of the time the telephone is taken off-hook or downtime that average 5 minutes per year.

We have elected to trade off reliablity for cost. The cable company charges us only $13.75 for VOIP phone service.

What a great summary of what happened. Thank you. It was hard to keep up with SWB at the time. They stepped in and moved fast. They just remained Southwestern Bell to me until they went AT&T. Even then it took me a while to start writing AT&T on my checks to them. Old habits die hard. All that history because Judge Green got peeved about something. Wish I had that much power. Or, do I? Probably not, really.

What happened to Bell South? Don't think you mentioned Bell South - my favorite. When Ma Bell broke up, AT&T investors could trade for a piece of each Baby Bell or select any one that they chose. I chose Bell South and it did well.

Thank you, again, Paco.

Local phone charges averaged $10.55 a month in 1983. On January 1, 1984, the former components of the Bell System were structured into the following companies, which became known as the Baby Bells.

Using CPI inflation calculator $10.55 in Jan 1984 has the same buying power as $26.09 in July 2018. Of course the surcharges and fees are much higher today.

As two companies bought 6 of the 7 Baby Bells, it is not clear what the break up actually accomplished.

In a merger announced on March 5, 2006, and executed on December 29, 2006, AT&T Inc. (originally SBC Communications) acquired BellSouth for approximately $86 billion (1.325 shares of AT&T for each share of BellSouth). The merger also consolidated ownership of Cingular Wireless and Yellowpages.com, both of which were joint ventures between BellSouth and AT&T.With the merger completed, wireless services previously offered by Cingular Wireless were then offered under the AT&T name, and BellSouth Telecommunications (a subsidiary of Bell Operating Company) began doing business as AT&T Southeast. The company became known as BellSouth, LLC on June 26, 2015.

BellSouth was the last of the Regional Bell Operating Companies to keep its original corporate name after the 1984 AT&T breakup, as well as the last one to retain the Bell logo as part of its main corporate identity.

Region-wide headquarters operations were also primarily in Atlanta and Birmingham. Statewide operations centers were located in Birmingham, Miami, Atlanta, Louisville, New Orleans, Jackson, Charlotte, Columbia, and Nashville.

So we keep on paying for the service that we do not use, and million phishing calls a day come thru so that our beloved person has access to the world via a PHONE>

Consider installing an answering machine with Caller ID on the line, then don't answer ANY calls. Let them all go to the machine, then call back any important callers who have left a message.

That's what we do here with our 74 y/o. FWIW our unit is also a cordless phone.

Total Wireless is a division of TracFone that uses the Verizon network. For three phones with 20GB of shared data the cost is $85 plus taxes or fees ($4 discount with auto-pay). We spend $85 a month to run three cell phones, some with very limited minutes and get unlimited cable internet data at 50 Mbps with a VOIP phone. Yes we need Caller ID to avoid the solicitors that call morning until night, but that is the price of keeping a phone number established in 1958.

My parents are 82 and 83 and they dislike cell phones and do not want to walk around with them all day. The VOIP landline lets them keep the phones they are familiar with, and the unlimited data to run computers and TiVos is of infinitely more value to them than the ability to get data on the road.

Ameritech. Those were the good old days.
