true there. but it always seems like T- mobile is trying to beef up there service and adding more crap onto it to draw in customers without expanding it into more areas
If you need to make calls, you can use the Google Voice app for cellular calls
If your use Google Voice via cell towers, then you are using data. You need to have at least a 3G data connection which gives you a minimum of 128 Kbps when in a moving car. It may be cheaper to use 2G voice minutes.
But as to your main point, it is not clear if T-mobile DIGITS is better than Google Voice, or if it is just more heavily promoted.

Valid point. I'm really not sure why Google can't get Google Voice to work reliably over 2G data. I have done it before over Sprint, but I can't recommend doing so.
It would be cheaper to use 2G voice, assuming that the OP has unlimited voice. Not really sure who wouldn't in this day and age but there are some penny pinchers out there with like 100 minutes voice and a $3 phone bill.
You're actually better off using Google Duo on a 2G connection than you are using Google Voice; you won't get video on a throttled connection, but the audio works fine. Not sure why they can't use the same compression algorithms on Google Voice.
