Google Play is the app that handles installing and updating apps, via the play.google.com/store.
I suspect that it's hard-installed (IE: you're not allowed to un-install it, if you so wished, unless you're rooted).

As it should be. It wasn't uninstalling Google Play, it was uninstalling the updates, that may have been corrupted, and that consumes memory, because of how Google Play is accessed when apps run.

You can't uninstall Google Play, it's a system app. Unless your phone is fully rooted, it won't be easy to do. The reason Google Play crashes is usually because it was in the middle of updating or installing an app and your phone doesn't have enough resources to finish the task. Usually phones with 2GB or less memory and having too much stuff running in the background causes Google Play to crash.

I really wish they'd stop selling 1GB phones. Causes way too much confusion when stuff doesn't work right. Even 2GB is problematic from time to time.
