Recently, I called Great Courses to purchase a couple of their programs.

The representative volunteered my iPhone number, but my new iPhone has caller ID turned off. (in Settings, Phone, Show My Caller ID, Off). I asked how she knew my phone number, and she said "caller ID."

I leave it off because I do not want my phone number added to a database, then sold and become the target of all those awful phone calls. (Hello, is the Head of the Household available? Or, a survey. Or a charity. Etc.)

Does anyone know whether "Show My Caller ID...Off" reveals phone numbers to merchants? I suppose they would have to pay a fee or be a significant customer. I suppose it could be revealed by either Apple or ATT.

When I call friends, they cannot see my phone number.

The provider supplies the caller ID. You can request the carrier to block your caller ID and there is another option where you dial *67 + the dialed number to block on an individual basis.

There are also restrictions to caller ID. E.g. you can't block your number from toll free numbers and emergency numbers. So if the company you're calling is via a toll free number, that may be why.

Also this is not how you get on Robo Calling lists.

Thanks to all who responded.
I did not know about 800 numbers reporting Caller ID (it was an 800 number).
I will ask ATT to block my number.
*67 does not work on my iPhone.
Robo calls are a nuisance, but my concern was merchants collecting numbers.

Thanks again.

What purpose would a merchant be trying to collect your number for?
