There is certainly potential security flaws in the device but those are typically patched before they become a problem. If you are one these people that do not update devices/software or are using something that EOL and no longer updated you are putting yourself at risk.
She has an android phone and depending on your carrier could take months for a an update to become available on your Android device
How having a VPM app on your phone? I don't do banking on my phone, just voice and text, but a friend of mine does bank transactions with his iPhone. He has Norton VPM, but I have no idea how such apps work.
My two cents worth. Personally, I rarely use my smartphone for banking. With my home laptop (PC once hacked over 15 years ago in early Internet days and big mess to clean up), over the years I since added/updated a hardwire wired router (not Wifi), software firewall, anti-virus; browser addons ScriptSafe, HTTPS Everywhere, McAfee Web Advisor, and WOT Web of Trust; rarely get spam with Sieve and HTML email blocking; Malwarebytes Premium with also web, exploit, and ransomware blocking; keeping software updated through SUMo software updater and Windows updates, and SpyShelter with encryption anti-keylogger,screen capture and webcam capture blocking. Any computer/device security expert will tell you multiple layers of security is best, topped with common sense such as not opening unknown email attachment or web links. The addons are free, but most of the rest I pay for (run the chance that free security can be laden with ads which can be infected). Smartphone security apps are getting better, but not there not yet as far as layered security. So anything with SSN, date of birth, debit card number, some bank account info, and other very sensitive personal information best not to transmit over a less secured smartphone; but credit card is ok (only use 2 of my 4 credit cards online), as if hacked, it is easier to replace and get charges reversed.
