I already have a phone, but would like to get another one to use as an mp3 player and alarm clock. There is a GSM smartphone that's on sale for a good price. I am thinking of buying it to use as an mp3 player and alarm clock. Do smartphones have to be activated first in order for to use the mp3 player and alarm function?

Be sure to listen to it first....some of these totally suck for playing music.

I've done the same thing with my superseded phone.
When I got my current one, I pulled out the SIM card from the older one, but it still can WiFi to my home network.
I used WiFi (or a USB cable) to transfer music files to it, and use it for a music player.
This is especially nice as my old phone had a propritary docking station that can't be used with anything else, but makes it great for desktop permanent use.

Yes, they work as MP3 players assuming you have enough storage.

Deactivated phones will also work to stream music over wifi.

Highly recommend a LG V10, V290, V30 or an HTC U11.
These devices have the best speakers.

Mine has a standard earphone jack, that I cabled to my TV's soundbar's Aux Input, so I get super good quality sound and can use the soundbar's remote for volume changing.

I bought a $99 Iphone 6s from Walmart a few months ago - for the Smart talk network. But, I never activated it. I bought it to use as a tv streaming device. Cheaper than an ipad or Ipod Touch. 32GB of memory.

I use it as an ipod as well.

Also a good option.
