As a parent, with a few 'well to do' children, we end up with hand me down pretty fancy smartphones, every time our kids get a new one... Often they get their new one from where they work!!

They get the latest, we get the last year model, the two-year-old model becomes the PDA on our desk.

One use I have for an older model is to use it on my desk as an extra PDA, that does everything except make a phone call.

In case of an emergency, it can call 911!

I also use it to find my family via an APP that knows where all the phones are in my immediate family.
The kids also thus know where we are.

As an extra GPS, that old phone is also a perfect free fancy GPS!

It is a weather station!

What are some of the things that phone does for you?

You can donate them. Some Churches will take them, or some malls have a drop off kiosk, that may give you money.

Last year models, at least with iPhones, are excellent. Heck, we both have older iPhones. They perform well and do everything we want. Why buy the latest and greatest when an older model meets your needs and more?

My iPhone SE which went through both kids is now my CarPlay phone, thanks to T-Mobile giving me a free line. The battery is iffy but plugged in it’s fine. It doubles as an extra “emergency” phone or a loaner to a visiting relative if needed.

Use indoors as a cheap surveillance camera.

I keep my old phones as back ups.

I put authenticator apps on them in case I lose my main device, and need to get codes on the back up device.

I also use them as cheap Youtube viewing devices, rather than burn the battery on my daily phone in case I need my daily driver to make calls, do things on it.

Old phones are still very useful to have.

I have an older Moto Z-Force I use as a clock in the bedroom on a stand. My LG G7 is on a table waiting for me to return in a few weeks from a camping trip and then I will put it up for sale on Swappa and get a hundred+ for it.

My credit card gives me insurance on the phone I am using, so if my pixel breaks from a fall, stolen, etc., so even though I don't need to wait for the insurance check, I will still have to wait a few days to order a new factory unlocked phone and have it shipped. So I would use the Moto Z for the back up and all I would have to do is go to wally world, Fred Meyers or other placed and pay a buck to obtain another SIM card.

But why??? It still has many usable features.
Fill the landfill if you want, I am all for repurposing, not to mention that there are many people less fortunate who would
feel blessed having your "old" phone.
