The first phones probably didn't have the capability to transfer pictures..

Try it on another computer. I have never had a feature phone that linux didnt automatically see as a "mass storage device", mount it and it should open in your file manager. Just saying, maybe wonky computer and not wonky phone. Windows usually auto mounts everything. So just open your file manager and have a look if there is any usb drive shown.

You should get that popup when you plug it in whether you want to tether it or mount it as mass storage device.

Here are a bunch more apps like that one.
https://play.google.com/store/search...hl=en_US&gl=US

or you can go to play store and search for 'USB settings'.

or try to enable developer options.

The wording may not be exact on this since it varies but

Go to settings, about phone, then tap repeatedly on Build Number or Serial Number (it varies) till you see a message at the bottom about developer options. Then tap back and you should see develop options. Under that screen you should see something like 'USB Computer Connection' or 'File transfer', MTP or PTP. I cannot give you specific instructions since it varies by manufacturer and Android version.
Nothing like that under the "about phone". So I will try the apps, thanks.

If an app does not work, you can still try developer options.

I have Android 8. The steps are 'Settings', 'About Phone', 'Software Info', Tap 'Build Number' multiple times to get developer options.

Yours is likely different, what version of Android do you have? It should also be under 'Software Info' or similar.

Did the app work? That would be the easiest way to enable the settings you need if in fact it's possible.

Android 10 should have developer options. It could/may have been disabled on that phone for whatever reason.

Take your cable so they can test or possibly help you correct the issue while you are there. If you are lucky, it might be OK and you won't need to have it replaced.

A woman I know that works at Walmart wrote it down as defective. She traded a new one for it and it works fine. Don't know why Alcatel would not help.
