I am thinking about if I should get one of the new iPhones. They look really neat, but I have a question. Does AT&T/Apple charge you for browsing the web, checking email, using web based applications, etc. or is it included in the amount that you already pay per month. I really don't want to get it and spend hours on the web and wind up being charged a lot of money without knowing. Please help. Thanks

Service charges are determined by your wireless carrier. For me, that's AT&T. To use the iPhone, you have to have a "normal" wireless calling plan (x minutes a month for $x) plus a "data plan" that costs $30 per month for unlimited data usage, which includes web browsing, email, location services, etc. - everything but text messages and phone calls. You can either pay for text messages individually at 20 cents apiece, which is outrageous, or pay a flat fee for a certain number of texts or even unlimited texts. I pay $5 a month for 200, which is plenty for me. So under my plan the only way I can get a "surprise" bill is to go over on my call minutes or on the number of texts I send or receive.

The "old" iPhone's data plan was only $20 a month, so I'm paying $15 more a month for the newer phone's plan. But even at $30 a month, the data plan is comparable to the cost of similar plans for blackberry or windows mobile devices through AT&T.
