can someone give me an idea of how many words might be contained in a 10 kb block
I am trying to find out how much info might be in that amount of text messaging to get an idea about phone charges vs text message from Italy...

In the US, your text message can be a maximum of 160 characters.

There are 7 bits per character, so each text message is 140 bytes.

A 10 KB block is 10,000 bytes.

10,000 bytes / 140 bytes = 71.4 US-length text messages

are they going to get internet service over there? You can use skype (if both ends have a computer) to make free calls.

When I go abroad, I usually get a SIM card with some pre-paid minutes stored onto it. In both Malaysia and India, I can call home for less than 10 cents a minute...

they are using a phone I bought for my son--their phone is not Italy friendly
ours works a little differently since does not use a pre-paid SIM card--
know about skype and they could set up account to use at internet cafes but they want a phone to have for emergencies mainly
and if they could just send a daily text message to check in with their adult children that is probably all they would need...

The text message that you want to send is charged a rate that will depend on your Italian mobile service provider and also the mobile service provider in the country you intend to send the message to. The rates also vary depending on their schedules and promos. Telecom Italia sending a text message to the USA may share a certain percentage of its revenue to AT&T, but that percentage may be different with what it will give to Verizon. What you can do is to ask your Customer Service as they have a table that shows the rates.

Also ask CS on the length of the text messages as they may vary depending on the two networks involved. One mobile company may support multiple page messages of 160 characters per page while the other receiving/sending company might have limitations to fewer pages. In the same breath, your mobile handset may have some limitations. The more advanced mobile companies can now handle up to five pages if your handset can hack it.

Dica che ciao a tutti gli Italiani piacevoli come quei mi sia incontrato alla fontana di Trevi. Grazie.
