For the first time, the number of U.S. households opting for only cell phones outnumber those that just have traditional landlines in a high-tech shift accelerated by the recession.

I gave up the landline 5 years ago and ticked off AT&T when I went with Covad for DSL and then got VoIP. To be fair, I had asked AT&T if I could get DSL only and they said no.

I gave up the VoIP 3 years ago and been on cell only since. Granted, I don't use the phone a lot and pay $24 a month for 200 anytime and unlimited nights and weekends.

As the U.S. becomes more mobile I'd expect to see a further reduction in landlines. I was reading just yesterday on a Verizon forum (emps and formers only) about a continuing loss of landline customers.

Gave up my land line last Fall. Don't miss the ghost calls, wrong numbers and my bills that were heavily taxed... I use AT&T Cell Service and Comcast for internet.

$24 a month for 200 minutes? That's a bit high for VOIP, I pay $10 a month for 500 outgoing minutes, free incoming. I have VOIP due to bad cell signal in my area, I usually get only a single bar of signal.
