Apple just rejected the Google Voice iPhone application from App Store distribution, the most recent in a long line of questionable moves, and the message is clear: If you want a device that won't lock you out of innovation, skip the iPhone.
So what keeps me from just going to google.com/voice in Safari on the iPhone and making calls that way? Sounds like more of AT&T trying to limit direct competition, same as with tethering and SMS.
I think it was AT&T who influenced Apple to reject Google Voice. I think its wrong, who is AT&T to say what can and can't go on my iPod touch, I think I'll wait until the iPhone is on another carrier. AT&T is stopping innovation.
I can't wait for AT&T's exclusive agreement to expire, but there's a lot of back and forth over whether Apple will continue the arrangement or not. At least the carrier is AT&T and not Verizon - Verizon passed on the iPhone because it couldn't be restrictive enough with terms and apps for the iPhone. If it wasn't for AT&T, the iPhone may never have gotten off the ground, in the US at least.
AT&T doesn't make a lot of sense to me however - you can't tether a computer to it for Internet, but the iPhone has unlimited data and the channel is the same. You can't send MMS text messages, but you can watch YouTube videos all day. You can't use a Google Voice App, but you can access Google Voice through Safari.

I disagree about it never launching however I agree Verizon would've severely hampered app development. If anything positive came about from a Verizon perspective it was that they have since realized they can't do what they used to do with locking down phones. I hope the Pre remains in its current state when it comes to Verizon.
The only Apple product I ever purchased was an I-pod. It's a great product. However, I'm still a PC man. The MAC is so overpriced and so overrated. As for cell phones, I just use my phone to make telephone calls. The I-phone is way too busy for me.
