Default Cell Phone Tracking

My son has been staying out way too late... is there a way I could track his cell phone number? I've tried using the free ones on the internet, but they all give different locations.

I'm thinking maybe only the phone service provider would be able to help.

Hello: Is he on your account or is this his own personal line? I had my children on my own personal account then I could log in and look up usage and phone numbers and such. At the time I was with Verizon.

What do you mean track? Are you trying to see his physical location? Is your son on YOUR plan or on his own?

Most phones have GPS now built-in, depending on his phone, he can allow it to show his location, but he has to do it with his phone.

You can't just type in a phone number and see where they are, that would create HUGE privacy issues, among other issues.

If he is on your account, you can have your service provider enable the tracking within his phone - as long as his phone it turned on, it will enable you, through your computer, to see where, phyically, he is at all times.

No, not unless he physically sets his phone to "Location On" most times it's 911 only.

Folks, the OP did not ask for advice on the relationship with their son. They asked about a specific potential feature of the cell phone. Please stick to that!

No you can't unless their son enables the location feature, even then you can't just track someone without the proper knowledge.

Most wireless companies offer to enable the GPS tracking, permanently, to allow others to track that phone - even if the user knows nothing about it.

Employers do it. Parents can do it. People who care for those who may have difficulty in remembering where they are -

And the user does not necessarily have to give permission or have knowledge about it.

Erik, if you don't know what you're talking about don't try to argue it.

In emergency situations, the cell phone provider can gather data from nearby towers, and compare the relative signal strength, and track someone down to within about 300ft or so, but it can take up to 30-40 minutes to triangulate the persons position, so if they're moving it can be almost impossible.

Plus, it is illegal to track a person without the proper legal authority, which the OP does not have. Just because he/she can't control their kids is not a matter for the police.

You can't just hop online and track someone down, it's not that easy.
