Hello, my girlfriend and I recently moved from Minnesota to Houston, TX. We had high hopes of leaving the winter behind and enjoying a hot, nice, southern city. However, Houston just isn't for us. The sprawl is just way too large for our tastes. We don't have the cash flow to simply pack up and keep moving. So wherever we end up this time will be home. So, needless to say we REALLY want to get it right. Our options at this time are Nashville, and Charleston. Charleston really appeals to us because of its size. If you guys could just throw out the names of the desirable neighborhoods, based on safety. We'd like to keep our rent around 650, however, in a craigslist search that looks pretty hard... How's Charleston's economy right now, my gf's a CNA has 2 years left to get her RN which she will be doing in Charleston. I used to work construction, but that didn't pan out in Houston. I will pretty much do anything until we get our feet on the ground and then try to find a career. All responses are greatly appreciated thanks ahead of time.

It's going to be difficult finding rent for $650 a month anywhere in Charleston. Maybe parts of North Charleston or Summerville you may be able to get a 1 bedroom, but even that will be difficult. We just moved here almost 3 months ago and are renting a home in Summerville for $1100 a month and it's in a nice neighborhood. As far as Southern cities go, Charleston isn't one of the cheaper cities to move to. It's pretty expensive compared to other Southern cities, but Charleston isn't like any other Southern city I've been to, and that's why we are here. Don't come here without employment and think you can just find work when you get here, because that probably won't happen. Nashville might be more economical option for you. I wish you the best of luck in your move.

Yes $650 is a low rent but it sounds like a 1 bedroom is all you need. There are some rentals on MLS in summerville/N Charleston/charleston bedroom under 650 but maybe an apartment would be a better option. As far as jobs you may want to find one before you move here permanently good jobs are hard to find.

Go to Realtor.com and apartmentfinder.com for rentals......

Nashville is much larger with it's fair share of sprawl....
