It doesn't rank the schools. That's the important thing for me. I don't want to be in the district that scores the highest -- I want the highest ranking schools. It doesn't follow that the highest ranking schools are in the highest ranking district.....

I think Dorcester 2 schools are fine schools but you get my point. You could have a bunch of medium performing schools be in the highest ranking district -- and yet the best schools could be in a district that doesn't rank very high at all. It all depends on the variation of scores from school to school.

according to Obama I think we're 57th... lol

most schools in the S'Ville area rank higher than the national avg, we just have so many across the state that are far below causing our avg ranking to dive

we're ranked 49th in the country....hence the saying "Thank God for Mississippi!". What drags down our rank is all the rural outerlying areas in SC. Here in CHS the schools are not bad at all.

Same thing in all the bottom states -- the problem isn't that ALL the schools in the state are bad the problem is that there are so many schools (usually rural) that bring down the overall rank.

Would it be better to be in a good high school in a bad state or a medium high school in a great state....

I've never been really impressed with the system in place for ranking the schools across the Nation enough to even pay attention to state by state rankings. There are countless variables that influence how well a school is doing at educating their students, and it's impossible to really see that in the numbers. Sure, a school like Wando can put some impressive numbers on the board, but does that really mean that there are exceptional teachers there, or are they just lucky with their "raw materials"? I am far more impressed with a school in the inner city dealing with kids who have very few advantages in life posting 50% pass rates than schools in affluent areas posting 95% pass rates. My kids come from a very highly rated school, but the school has become all about their rating, so three months before it's time for WASL exams the kids start "practicing" for the test. The schools high test scores are more about how hard they crammed the info into the kids heads just before the test, rather than what they are actually learning all year. These scores are a useful tool when school hunting, but they are nothing compared to having an opportunity to speak to parents of the kids in the schools you are considering, IMO.
