Yikes! After reading this thread, I'm worried about Mom coming down for Thanksgiving. Maybe I should have her sign a disclaimer or make her sleep in the car?

Sounds like a difficult situation for sure. Laws are written (and sometimes revised) to protect the public. They can be difficult when you feel like you're on the wrong end of them, but with persistence you can and will win if the law's on your side. Have you considered calling a local attorney? Perhaps there's some punitive ramifications to the person who's refusing to leave? Perhaps the threat of a lawsuit might be enough to know some sense into them? I've luckily never had to deal with the problem directly, I'm sure it's a frustrating situation for you and I wish you the best in you're resolve.

If they require documentation to make them leave, then they should require documentation to let them "reside" their. And without this documentation they have no legal obligation to there stuff if they are to abandon it.

this law can cause harm and danger to some as well, I have an aquaintance going through the process now of trying to evict an exboyfriend who basicly took advantage of her, munipilitated, and lied about multiple things, when she wanted to break up and asked him to leave, he refused and pulled this law out on her. He has made threats to her as well as friends and co-workers. He also has destroyed property such as her car, locks, doors, computers, a washing machine, phones etc. This man is dangerous!!! She is being told he has the "right " to stay in HER HOUSE!!! That is not only Stupid, but irresponsible!
