And to bring this thread up to date, I'm sure Trump would say those rats are YUGE, and they've crossed over from other countries.
SEND THEM BACK!

Looks like I have a similar problem :\

Not necessarily rats in the attic, but rodents of some kind under the house and in the walls. They woke me up about 2 am , rustling around.

The landlord has a contract with a pest control company, so he's doing something, it's just not working. I've been here about 1.5 months

I'm going to call a lawyer tomorrow, but anybody have advice?

Years ago in Columbia I had a baby opossum coming under my house and living in a wall. I called a wildlife removal company. There was a small space between the HVAC duct and the bricks of the house that the company sealed off. That took care of it.

We had rats nesting in the crawl space under the house before we moved in. Had them removed & contracted for the whole house to be examined & "cleared" so to speak. A year later, squirrels (cute rats with bushy tails) were eating the wood around our attic window -- we found wood chips on the porch below & heard them above.
Called original company & owner apologized for not sealing off with screening that attic window. Every entry point needs to be sealed.

Animals happen! We have taken over their natural habitats. I'm laughing as I say this -- 'cause coming from NYC, rats = filth. Here, they = God's natural creatures in the wild. But, I still get them exterminated! Deal & good luck!

Wildlife Solutions was the company ... may be 843-571-5556.

The owner's apology & story was that he had to fire the guy who worked on our home originally. And then he made it right with no charge to us. So, I can recommend him. He came, he fixed, he conquered the rats!

Found out today that our rental house has previously had, and may currently have, rats in the attic. There are piles of rat poo in the attic. The exterminator who was out today also remembered treating the house prior to renovation and trapping rats in another room of the house.

We are at a hotel right now.

The neighbors and owner are saying, hey no big deal, they're pretty common around here, just get some traps, etc. and make sure the vents are blocked. The owner said maybe he would have the rat poo taken care of in a couple of months. ?????

But my husband and I are pretty freaked out and scared to death about rat bites and the bugs and disease they carry (2 young kids)....

Do we try to move out IMMEDIATELY or do we try to get the owner to fix the problem? (I should add that this is not a cheap house we are in). We can't afford to stay at a hotel for very long.

HELP!!!
"Pretty common there"? OMG; what part of Charleston???

Your city likely has some of the founding fathers of the rat population.

Many coastal communities have to deal with rats. It is a worldwide problem.
Stop Rats in Alaska (http://www.stoprats.org/boats.htm - broken link)

You should see some of the river rats in New Orleans. They are the size of an otter.
"River rats" in Louisiana are actually another rodent more closely related to the beaver; Nutria, imports (stowaways) from South America.
