We are moving to Charleston in the next two months and are hoping to have our child in Porter Gaud - if not this year then with luck in a few years. It is very similar to her current school and she loves it. We hear many Porter families are in the Mt Pleasant area, yet we see the commute as 45min or higher from where we were looking - Park West and Dunes West. How do other families handle that commute - or do you?
From my experience, the majority of Porter Gaud students lived downtown, West Ashley, James Island, or Johns Island. The commute from Mt. Pleasant would indeed be very long. If you are interested in finding a new neighborhood closer to the school, have you considered the newer developments West Ashley or on James Island? While these areas are a little older than Mt. P, they have just as many conveniences as East Cooper if not moreso. New, modern neighborhoods are being developed in those locations as well as Mt. P. It's worth a look.
I dissagree, there are many children from Mt. Pleasant who attend PG, and there are car pools. I was able to get to PG in a little over 20 minutes from Long Point Road the other day!
Hi there: I am new to City-Data, and I am using it to search possible southern cities I could call home. I too am a Cleveland native, and I can proudly yet miserably say that I just survived the most depressing winter of my life. We are looking to relocate next spring (I think I might have one more winter in me) to either Charlotte, Raleigh, Charleston, Rock Hill areas. I am a teacher working on my adminstrative license-which I will have next spring, and my husband can work from anywhere. I just wanted to reach out to a Clevelander who made the move and ask how you like it? I am a sun lover and feel like I could take whatever Charleston can throw at me in August 10X better than I can handle February in NE Ohio. We are plannign a vacation there is August, but I really want to know what life is like. Anything you could share would be greatly appreciated.
I drive that route a few times a week (I work another 5-7 minutes down the road on James Island). If I'm leaving Park West around 7am, it's about a 30 minute drive.
I have been wondering the same thing. I know this thread is old, but since a lot of the private schools are not in MP or DI, what are the drive times. We are moving to MP or DI this summer and are probably going to go the private school route. Porter Gaud seems so far away, but maybe not Ashley Hall or Charleston Day. Thanks for the info!
Add 10 minutes to every time estimate you get here. TRust me on that one. I have tested all these theories of coming from Park West to the bridge at all times of days -- and it is usually 10 minutes more than what folks estimate....and I'm not even measuring from a driveway but from a major intersection.
For example, it took me 25 minutes to get from 526/17 to Wando High School last week. And I'm a good 10 minutes from the bridge.
