Every Oct-Nov, my father-in-law- a direct, no-frills type of guy (retired logger with both arms and ALL his fingers!) will tell people entering the house:
'No, nobody s*it their pants, we're making sauerkraut.
The sights and sounds.... and smells..... of Fall in the Northwoods.
Ha! He sounds like a character. He probably makes great sauerkraut too.
Once upon a time The Colony House downtown Charleston was the only place that made/served it... Mike Pappus was the chef IIRC... Mike Altine owned it I believe, he still owns and runs several out standing places today... The Variety Store being one...
want to know where much of the really good Charleston food came from, Mike Altine's the one to ask

Yeah, but a black chef invented the recipe for She Crab Soup, and he was in the empoly of a place called Everettes when he did so.
Thanks. I had heard of it, but never knew where it was.
Yeah, went there when I was maybe (10); that was a few millenia back.
There was also a 'Piggy Park' drive-in near it.
Oh, and I forgot to mention: Wild Rice.
Another staple fare up in this part of the 40.
