"But your real mistake is confusing psychopaths who use religion as a thin veneer to justify their madness, versus people who practice their religion seriously."

One big difference, when McVeigh blew up the federal building and Rudolph the Olympic park you didn't see Christians around the world lining the streets celebrating, Christians were outspoken about how horrible these attacks were how vile and disgusting...

So were Muslims.

You are thinking of Gaza where the population has been controlled/oppressed by the Israeli Army for so long.

Also do not forget that both McVeigh and (esp.) Rudolph were given aid, comfort, and hidden by Christian extremists.

Islam, Culture and Women - Ruqaiyyah Waris Maqsood (http://www.islamfortoday.com/ruqaiyyah09.htm - broken link)

"Anyone wishing to understand Islam must first separate the religion from the cultural norms and style of a society. Female genital mutilation is still practised in certain pockets of Africa and Egypt, but viewed as an inconceivable horror by the vast majority of Muslims. Forced marriages may still take place in certain Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, but would be anathema to Muslim women from other backgrounds.

Indeed, Islam insists on the free consent of both bride and groom, so such marriages could even be deemed illegal under religious law."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Islam

"In Islam, the sexes are considered equal before God. Allah says in verse 13 of chapter 49 in the Holy Quran: "O mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know one another. Verily, the most honourable of you with All‚h is that (believer) who has At-Taqwa. Verily, All‚h is All-Knowing, All-Aware."[citation needed] At the same time, Islamic law and practice recognize differences between sexes, resulting in different rights and obligations."

Tom,

You're relying way too much on corporate propaganda (which does not gives a rip one way or another about Islam, Christianity, beliefs, etc, but only wants OIL.); That is what is responsible for the plunge in American's view (down from 60% fave in 2004 to 30% today) of Muslims.

Because having been thwarted to a large degree in the Oil War of Iraq (they did get the oil fields privatized, but in a political finger-flip, the Iraqis sold the leases to the Russians and Chinese), corporate America now is going after the consolation prize: Iran.

You simply do not understand either Constitutional Law, nor History.

Not true, these two nut jobs didn't kill themselves, the state did it or will do it for them....

If that is the 'main difference', I believe that it matters little to the dead, or their next of kin.

Good luck.
Ya know, on second thought that is a bit too much of a generalization.

Some things have changed, as Southern society (specific to S.C.) has morphed.

Regarding the 'damn yankee' thing, that has changed, a little:

Charleston has been (since the 40's) a center of a large military complex. With that came people from all-over: the precursors of today's boomtowners.
It wasn't a happy synthesis between military and locals. In the late 70's there was a survey released that showed the residents of the Trident Area were among the unhappiest in the country.
Many reasons for this, but in a rare flourish of accuracy, the Newsless Courier hit the reason (for at least 1/2) on the head:
'They are not here by choice' (the military), 'and they do not live in Historic Charleston.' (another slam against the North Area, which deserves a slam or two.)

From the locals view, these outsiders ('Yankees', whether they were New York Italians, or Wyoming Cowboys) took the best (Navy Yard) jobs, got the best retirement (military pensions), and in short were the subject of envy and all the negatives this evokes.

This response was not hard to produce; in fact it is hardwired into the typical Middle Class (by local definition)South Carolinian, who has been divided by race by the Bourbons (or Tillmanites) ever since the slaves were given equal status by the Feds.

Translate this into today, and you see a society that is polarized (esp in a depression) between the long-time residents, who both hate and envy the newcomers, and the boomtowners who don't know and don't care about local history/issues, and only want to (Geez!) enjoy the weather.

Not just Gaza but all over the Muslim world they were celebrating, there were NO celebrations here and believe me if one would have happened every media outlet would have aired it 24/7......

Rudolph wasn't given aide by anyone he lived off of the land and was caught as a bum going through trash cans in Tenn. Muslim families are given $10K by the governments of Iran and other extremists to pay for their 'sacrifice' to the cause.......

McVeigh wasn't helped by any Christian extremists his help came from kooks on the over throw the government front not the religious front.....

Eric Robert Rudolph - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"It is thought that Rudolph had the assistance of sympathizers while evading capture. Some in the area were vocal in support of him. Two country music songs were written about him and a locally top-selling T-shirt read: "Run Rudolph Run." The Anti-Defamation League noted that "extremist chatter on the Internet has praised Rudolph as 'a hero' and some followers of hate groups are calling for further acts of violence to be modeled after the bombings he is accused of committing."[7]
Rudolph's family supported him and believed he was innocent of all charges,[8] but found themselves under intense questioning and surveillance.[9] On March 7, 1998, Rudolph's older brother, Daniel, videotaped himself cutting off one of his own hands with a radial arm saw in order to, in his words, "send a message to the FBI and the media."[10] The hand was successfully reattached."

"Rudolph was unarmed and did not resist arrest. When arrested, he was clean-shaven, with a trimmed mustache, and wearing new sneakers. Federal authorities charged him on October 14, 2003. Rudolph was defended by attorney Richard S. Jaffe."

Rudolph has offered Bible verses to defend his actions.

I was involved in the hunt for Rudolph, as were many others. He was hidden/aided by Fundamentalists in Western N.C. No doubt to it.

MeVeigh blew-up the Murrah Building as revenge for the Waco incident with David Koresh.

I can also provide evidence of sympathy from Muslims after Sept 11, if you wish.
