This thread is a great vignette as to why Americans keep making the same mistakes over and over again:

They just do not know their own history.

The flag means different things to different people. They certainly have the right to fly it, but it doesn't seem very neighborly, or smart, not to recognize that your neighbors find it offensive.

This family has the 'right' to fly whatever flag they want. They could fly a KKK and Nazi flag if they chose. The question is, do they want to put up with the heat, particularly from a prodominantly black community in which they chose to live, for exercising that right?

I think they're probably smarter than they originally appear and enjoy the publicity.

"The mosque" is already built. They are already holding their chants to allah there daily. Don't believe me go to the 60 minutes site and watch the story for the muslim who owns the building and is doing it.

I myself wouldn't do it and can understand how her neighbors would feel offended, but it is her yard, her house, and her right.

fly what you want, no one alive today was a or owned a slave... and the flag didn't represent slavery by any stretch of the imagination, even if it is what people today decide to relate it too

the mosque is another whole story, for many reasons they do NOT have the right to build it there and it should be stopped... as I think it will be one way or another...

South Carolina and Its Flag

http://edhelper.com/ReadingComprehension_54_1473.html

"Some people trace the controversy all the way back to the Civil War, while others point to the mid-1900s when Confederate flags were flown in defiance of the civil rights movement. In Georgia, for instance, the Confederate flag was reintroduced in 1956, just two years after the Supreme Court decision Brown v. Board of Education. It was considered by many to be a protest against school desegregation."

Um, You do know there was a mosque inside the Twin Towers, and that Muslims were also killed on 9-11?

Let's be honest enough to call bigotry, bigotry.

I see it as similar to the mosque issue in NY; while they may have the right to fly the flag, it's probably not the smartest thing to do.
I'd rather see a Rebel Flag than a Nazi swastika flag or a Commie hammer and sickle flag, or a North Korean flag or some other crap like that.
