Default What are the benefits of living in Summerville...

other than their good public school? Any other advantages to living in West Ashley or James Island?

Lower cost of living, lower insurance rates, more home for your money, small town values and atmosphere, friendly people, festivals, great local restaurants, low crime rate, less susceptible to hurricane damage, convenient location to other areas and contrary to what some people might believe the traffic in Summerville is not bad, it's the commute to and from Summerville in the mornings and afternoons that is the problem, but they are working on solutions for that.

How bad is the commute, really? Currently where I am, it takes me about 1 hour, door to door, on public transit, which changing buses one time. Is there any public transit out that way? I don't mind driving, if I have to, but I like to use public transportation if possible, just to save on parking, wear and tear, gas, etc. Plus, I usually can get a little more sleep in the morning that way

No sorry, there is no public transportation in Summerville at this time. They have talked about a light rail system between Summerville and Charleston, but right now that is all it is, just talk. If it would happen it would be years away yet.

Summerville is a precious town! The only advantage to living West Ashley or James Island would be that they are closer to downtown. But Summerville is a great place to live!

Summerville is a very attractive town. The important thing to remember is that Summerville is out of the hurricane band. You will have MUCH cheaper homeowner's insurance, and no flood insurance.

Summerville has excellent high schools and middle schools. Summerville High is large but academically excellent. Also magnet schools are terrific for the younger kids. A lot of character, history and old timey charm still left in Summerville

How does Fort Dorchester High compare to Summerville High? Are they as crowded, as academically sound, as disciplined? Or are they pretty comparable?

Thanks!

Fort Dorchester might be a little smaller, but still an excellent school. Pinewood Prep is an excellent private school as well.
