Default want to leave CA

Hi! My husband and I will be finished with our education in one year, and we can't wait to leave California---but then the question becomes where to go? I have been looking into Charleston, South Carolina. Anyone have any information about that area? Actually, suggestions on any town in any state (aside from CA) would be much appreciated! We want to live somewhere beautiful with affordable housing and friendly people. We are not liberal Californians, however we do want to live somewhere in which the people are open minded and tolerant regarding civil rights, etc. Also, I will be hoping to teach english (writing and lit) courses at junior colleges or universites. My husband will be in the medical field (ultrasound, sonography). We like water and the mountains. My husband isn't a fan of humidity, but if he was next to the ocean, maybe he could get used to it.

How do Carolina people really feel about Californians moving in?
I really appreciate your opinons and look forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

hey there leavingcali-we moved to SC 2 1/2 years ago from Southern CA...I have yet to meet anyone that has been rude to me in the Carolinas. I seem to get two different responses when folks find out I am originally from CA....it is either a "Oh my gosh why would you leave and come here?"...or "Oh I would never ever go out there!"...yet as I mentioned before...no rudeness whatsoever. Charleston is a great area to visit (I'm about 3 hours away), it does get very humid (even more so during the summer months...and some other parts of SC), again coming from CA..you will find Charleston, SC to have pretty good home prices...but it is higher than other parts of SC. One thing you really must think about if you wish to live by the coast...is hurricanes (this was not something we ever had to think about in CA....our time was spent worrying about when the next quake might be). In CA we use to live 4 miles from the Ocean...so I too needed someplace close to some type of water (we live off Lake Wylie in Tega Cay, SC)....there are many, many lakes within the state...maybe that would be something to think about.

Not sure if that helps you out at all...but if you have any other questions feel free to ask away.

Good Luck with your search!

Thank you so much for your response--very helpful. What town are you living in and where else should I look? I am very open to living away from the ocean--just want some place picturesque, affordable, with decent climate. I will need a job teaching english at a junior college and the hubby works in ultrasound so we'll need to be near a medical facility. Any information, even just your opinions about where you live and where you have visted would be great!

hey there leavingcali - I am located in Tega Cay, SC (York County, tegacaysc.org)...close to Charlotte, NC. Where should you look?...that is hard to tell another person...what I like you might not..and vice-a-versa. There's different parts to SC (piedmont/midlands, coastal/lowcountry, upstate, etc....and I am rather partial to it all...as I think its all picturesque)....so it really is important to come see for yourself. If by chance after you have decided on or narrowed it down to a location...if its anywhere in my part of the world I would be more than happy to share with you what I know. Lastly, something that I have found from my move to the Carolinas....it's not just a place to relocate to...but also a way of life (do you know how much more of the world you can see and enjoy...when you slow down)

Take care and good luck with your search!

Charleston is a great choice, IMO. To me, it's very expensive - but if you're used to California prices, perhaps it'll be right up your alley. It's beautiful, old, and historic. There just aren't very many people that dislike Charleston. Also, there should be plenty of options in the medical field in Charleston. The state's most prestigious medical university is located there, along with several hospitals.

Even if I was able, it wouldn't be practical for me to explain all the differences between life in California and South Carolina. Suffice to say that you should expect it to be very different. I remember a while back (on this board) someone was complaining about their SC, and how they wanted to go back to CA. It's important to visit first, and establish realistic expectations about what things are like.

As far as being accepted, I doubt you're going to run into any problems. More educated southerners may pick on you about California's liberal politics, and likewise you may be somewhat shocked at what's considered socially acceptable and unacceptable. But generally speaking, southerners are very polite and friendly, and would keep quiet even if they did have a problem with Californians.

I was talking to someone yesterday who mentioned Summerville. While I have not been there, it certainly sounds like a nice place. Any thoughts from those of you on that side of the state? From what I could tell it sounded a lot like Aiken, but near the beach.

Summerville is exploding with growth. Not a bad place, but the commute into Charleston is getting worse by the day.

Leavingcali, Charleston sounds like a pretty good choice for you guys. I think anonymous summed up the reasons pretty well.

Hi there LeavingCali!

Charlotte has a great Jr College (called Central Piedmont Comm. College back when I went there...forever ago) and several Big Medical Complexes.
