Default Affirmation

Hey again! AmaznGrace is correct about the school system here, that is Dorchester District 2. My children would have gone to private schools if not for the fine public school education they are receiving here. I was amazed at the amount of students getting scholarships at my daughters' graduation. I think that speaks volumes about Dorchester 2. Yes, Summerville is growing by leaps and bounds...but the heart of our "Flowertown in the Pines" is still here. More schools are being built or are planned to be in the near future. I cannot begin to tell you how many activities there are for any age group, visiting the plantations, all the historic sites..if that is too slow, there are outdoor sports, golf, tennis, and soccer has become very popular as well as having our famous unbeatable Summerville Highs' sports program (okay, maybe I'm biased). We also have the semi-pro baseball and hockey teams that are a blast to go see in Charleston. I hope that this helps a little with such an important decision for anyone considering Summerville...I guess it's just like everything, if you look for the good in something, you will find it!

Post Possibly retiring in Summerville

My wife and I are seriously considering retiring in or around Summerville within the next two years. Everything we have heard or read about is positive and promising. I am used to the weather there after 27 years in south Louisiana, but my wife may find it takes some getting used to since she is from Ohio. Does anybody have any suggestions on possible places to search for buying a home there?

There are new neighborhoods popping up all over Summerville and more in the planning stages. Summerville was rated in the top 50 retirement spots a couple years ago. The location couldn't be better. There are so many places to go and things to see and do around here. It's a great place to retire. As long as you don't have to make any commutes on I-26/526 for work everyday, it's perfect.

1 hour to work a couple of hours to the beach? We can do better than that here in Summerville. How about nice quiet country living 30min from work and 45min from the beach with traffic. We Trident which is the primary care center for summerville we also various small emergency centes called Roper
not to mention MUSC downtown. Your surrounded by beaches and lakes. The Beaches are free of over commercialized features which allows you to relax and take in God's glory.

I was just wondering where in Western Pa you and your family are from. We also are from that area, near Pittsburgh. My husband and I have two children, a son 8, and a daughter 4. We have lived our entire lives in Waynesburg, PA and are desperately wanting a change. I will be graduating from college in 2008 and will be looking for a job as an RN. Summerville seems to be the most ideal place that we have looked at so far. I'm finding it so interesting that so many people seem to be relocating to the South.
If anyone has any suggestions on the easiest way to relocate I would love to have some ideas. My husband has been a corrections officer for the past 12 years and we are not sure how hard it's going to be for him to find a job. He has worked for a State Correctional Facility and his income is the part that we are worried about, because we are afraid he's going to have to take a huge pay cut if he starts a new job at entry level. Any ideas for his line of work?

Smile Summerville!

Hi, everyone. I see that alot of people are looking to relocate to beautiful Summerville, SC. I'm a long time resident, since childhood. I may be of some assistance in finding your new home in Summerville.

Schools are great! One of the best school districts in the state. Dorchester County Two. Weather is amazing. The last time I saw snow was in 1999 and it hardly stuck to the ground. We're only 20 minutes from the beach (Isle of Palms is my fave!). We're also only 20 minutes from downtown Charleston where you'll find great food, historic carriage rides, rainbow row, and the battery.

Summerville was once a small hometown to many. We still have town square, but we've also, within the last five years, added shopping, restaurants, and the real estate market has boomed.

If anyone is looking for temporary housing while looking to purchase a new home, there is a great place on Dorchester Rd called Waters Edge. I lived there before I bought my new home. I'm not sure what the prices are now, but I here they are less than $800 still.

If you have any other questions...just ask!!

We are from Western PA and looking to relocate to Summerville also. My husband and I visited this past spring and really loved the area. My suggestion is to take a trip down and check it out....you won't be sorry!! It's awesome. My husband is in the IT field...he is searching for a job. He has spoke with a few companies...we are hopeful! The only thing is it seems as though it's hard to land a job...they seem to like to take local candidates first...which makes sense...but stinks for us~! Anyway...we love Summerville and hope to call it home in the near future! PS~Southerndreamer....I sent you a PM.

Summerville is certainly a good option for many people. The Charleston Historic District and the Isle of Palms are great places to spend the day or just a few hours. However, the commute from the center of Summerville to the historic district, even during the less congested time of day will be a good bit longer than 20 minutes. Summerville is about 26 + miles from the historic district and 34 miles from the Isle of Palms. A more reasonable time would from my experience be about 45 minutes to the beach and 35 minutes to Charleston.

Default Summerville = Steeler Nation?????

Wow, I'm happily amazed to see the Western PA folks who are considering moves to Summerville. My hubby and I, originally from Western PA (me lifelong, him a Pitt grad transplant from Eastern PA) and now living in Northern New Jersey, are moving to Summerville in less than two years. We fell in love with Charleston on a vacation several years back, and since then we've spent lots of time in and around the area. We bought property in Summerville two years ago in a location where we can bring our own builder...don't think there's much of that kind of property left, though. Summerville is in Dorchester County, the sixth fastest-growing county in the nation, and as other posters have noted, its schools are among the best in the state. It's a lovely town with easy access (I know Charleston folks think their traffic is awful, but I'm used to the northern NJ/NYC metro area, so greater Charleston is a walk in the park) to the wonderful amenities of Charleston without the city noise and higher prices, but Summerville also has nice restaurants, an excellent theater company and a small artistic community (and one of the best YMCAs I've ever seen - what a gorgeous and AFFORDABLE facility!). Like Western PA, the people in the entire Charleston area are so friendly, especially in contrast to the general indifference and rudeness of northern NJ, and there are all kinds...natives, transplants, young, older...everyone has been as nice and welcoming and helpful as can be. A Pittsburgher/western PA native would feel right at home, except for the whole crappy Pittsburgh weather thing that will happily no longer apply!!!!! We can't WAIT to settle in to our future new home....and if any of you Western PA folks end up in Summerville, we'll find ourselves a place to turn into a Steeler bar and come football season, the Black and Gold will descend upon the Flowertown in the Pines!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
