They might want to make sure you properly allocated your income on your tax return. You might have made a mistake and maybe the w2's with addresses will resolve. At any rate they have access to your Federal return so they can get the information.

Did you not submit the proper copy with your return?

I e-filed it.

Do they just want copies of it on all returns?

I am not concerned, its very little money.

I have never e-filed, I have always mailed ours in.
When you do that you submit the appropriate copy with the return.
It could be that a number was transposed and they want to double check it.
I have heard of this happening and it causes a glitch.

BUT.....when you send it, if you haven't already, I would send with a delivery confirmation just to keep any future confusion at bay.

SC audited me two years ago...the first time in my life that I had been audited. (I have lived here 27 years) The lady who does my taxes told me that when the state is short of revenue, they start looking more closely at people who are getting a refund, especially if they are claiming more deductions than in past years. The year I was audited, I had had many medical procedures done so claimed almost 3 times the $$$ amount of money....I also gave more to charities, esp. my church, that year...so to make a long story short the state owed me a refund more than twice as much as the year before. As a result, I was red flagged and had to take in my past 3 years returns, pay stubs, and all of my receipts. Luckily, I am very organized and had everything they needed, so was in the clear and got my refund. However, it was a very stressful time for me and a lot of work!!
