Wife and I retired to Charleston from Boston (Andover) in 2002. We had been vacationing in this area for 25 years. My wife is a SC Native from Columbia.
Charleston will remind you some of Boston more then any other city in the state. Columbia is not a nice place. Greenville can be nice but it gets cold up there and no ocean.
This part of the low country is loaded with northeners from up your way and the midwest. It is the most liberal part of the state. Charleston county was the only SC county to vote Obama. Inland this is a very conservative, bible thumping, a bit red-neckish, state.
Fastest growing area for higher income folks is the Mount Pleasant area (referred to as the East Cooper area). Fast growing, less expensive it the Summerville, Goose Creek area.
