I have some friends that live in N. Charleston. If things were not so good here in Charlotte for us right now, I beleive I would take the journey south and live there for a while. Just my thoughts though.

A decent home in a safe area in downtown Charleston will start in the million dollar range. However, there are condos starting in the mid $500k's. You do not want to send your kids to the public schools in downtown Charleston.
North Charleston is an industrial area, it also has a reputation for high crime. Parts of it are not very pretty. However, they have been working to try and change that image, and are trying to revitalize and spark new life into some of the older rundown areas. There is also a new shopping center with the Tanger Outlets that offically opens August 31st, that is supposed to help boost North Charleston's image. There are some nice areas on the outskirts as you get closer to Goose Creek and Summerville that I would consider a safe area to live. Other than that I would not recommend living in North Charleston. |

Mount Pleasant,Summerville,or Goose Creek are where you want to be in that area. The cost of living in significantly higher than most areas in the Carolinas.

Sallyo,
I'm from LI too & we're considering Summerville. Houses are reasonably priced & it sounds like a good family area. Will be down there at the end of this week to check things out. I'll post more upon my return if you're interested in a NY-LI perspective! Jennie |

Also, don't get Summerville and North Charleston confused. The two do not compare. |

Huge difference. There is a small part of N. Charleston that is in Dorchester County (the "famous" District II schools), but that is where the similarity ends. Find an agent that specializes in Summerville - someone who knows our area and can direct you towards the best neighborhood for your money. Do your homework and you will love it here - I promise. End up in N. Charleston and you may wish you had never moved (of course, just my $.02).
