There are a couple of great rooftop bars in downtown Charleston along East Bay street near the market that are always wonderful in nice weather. Red's Icehouse on Shem Creek in Mount Pleasant is a great place to sit on the dock and watch the ships roll in all afternoon and evening as well.

As for food, there are just way too many great restaurants to mention. What type of food are you looking for?

Some good restaurants on Johns Island (near Kiawah) are Red Sky Grill (actually at the entrance to Seabrook), Gilligans Seafood (Main Road), and Fat Hen on Maybank Hwy. (French & Lowcountry). A nice place for drinks on James Island (next island over from Johns Island) is Charleston Crab House, which is next to the Wapoo Cut Bridge...this one has pretty good seafood and a great outside deck on the water. Also on James Island, on Maybank Highway, are Mustard Seed and Locklears - both have great food w/bars.
Then, there are lots of great restaurants and clubs downtown, but you should either take a cab or plan to stay down there for the night if you're drinking because that is about a 40-45 minute drive from Kiawah. Tommy Condons (Irish pub w/live music) is fun on a Saturday night!

I was so excited when I saw your post, because I am in love with food and an (amateur) food connossieur. Cru Cafe downtown (on Pinckney Street - about 2 blocks from the market - 534-2434) is outsanding. Superb presentation, amazing southern/eclectic cuisine - everything is wonderful. It's as good as any 5 star restaurant in Charleston, but still very reasonable - entrees are in the $12 to $20 range (you MUST try the 4-cheese macaroni , the grouper and the orange sherbert cake). Italian - Al Di La in West Ashley (asparagus risotto!), or Pane e Vino downtown on Warren Street (try the mushroom ravioli and the limoncella gelato for dessert if they have it... the spaghetti bolognese sounds boring but it is outstanding). Both are uber authentic holes-in-the-wall with the most amazing food and quaint atmospheres. Cypress or High Cotton on East Bay Street downtown are a little more upscale/swanky, but wonderful for cocktails (try the espresso martini at High Cotton) and for dinner. For cocktails, I would also try either of the rooftop bars downtown - Market Pavilion (above Grill 225 on the corner of Market & East Bay) or the Rooftop at Vendue near Waterfront park.

Smile Great Restaurant/Bar

Hi! A great place in between Kiawah & Downtown is located on Savannah Hwy (US17 northbound). It is about 6 miles from downtown Charleston. There is a place called the Town & Country Inn with Trotters Restaurant & lounge. No downtown parking to mess with. This place has awesome breakfast lunch & dinner with fresh cooked food - no frozen "fresh" foods. They have an awesome breakfast/lunch buffet on Sundays for about $11 with omelet bar, etc. This is a family owned place & their executive chef has been there for 20 years. By the way the hotel rooms are sparkling clean, reasonable and gorgeous - not like any other hotel I've been to. Have a great time on your visit.
