Hi, I have a 3 yr old with high functioning autism. We are considering a move to the Mount Pleasant, Charleston, or Goose Creek areas. Does anyone know how the services are for kids with special needs in the public schools? My son will be going into kindergarten when we move. We don't know much about SC in general. A job just happen to open up for my husband in the area, so we are just researching it now. Any info on schools, speech and OT services in the area will be helpful. Thanks.
Check with the county and ask if they have a birth to three program, they may be able to suggest your best options in the area for over three kiddo's. My understanding is the Dorchester School district is the most saught after district...Chk out link, I just placed it in the SD web site search. Hopefully other will see your post and help out. I currently work at a center that works with 0-3 and 3+ with multiple therapists OT/PT/SpL...but alas not in SC.

My kids have had other behavioral issues (OCD, ADHD) and their school in Mount Pleasant has been very good about Intervention (don't let the word scare you - it's just their way of saying, "intervene and come up with a plan of action for the parents, teachers, resource instructor, counselor, and school psychologist to help make the student a success," and Response to Intervention (RTI) follow-ups. We're getting ready to transfer these two to Dorchester 2 next year and they put together an Individual Education Program (IEP) document for us to take with us, basically something to help the new school understand what's going on and what tactics have been successful thus far (and which ones haven't worked). We haven't registered them with DD2 yet, so we'll see how it goes.
My 4 year old daughter has sensory processing disorder and some visual problems. We moved to North Charleston (Dorchester II schools, though) about a year ago. I have had some issues with DDII getting them to get her into their system and get the itinerant services paid for. I spoke with the BabyNet/ChildFind people (specifically, a nurse there named Karen) who told me that if I had contacted her before moving to the area she would have advised me to move to Charleston or Berkley (gasp!) counties because of the better services available for special needs kids. I was disheartened to hear this, since we specifically moved to this neighborhood because the proximity (walking distance) to DDII elementary and middle schools.
So, I would recommend calling the tri-county ChildFind office first...
Good luck!
