Can anyone tell me what the property tax percentage is in the Charleston/Summerville area? Does it vary by county? I am unable to find any information online regarding this. Also, if you could tell me a little about the vehicle property tax and how it is applied, that would be great!

Thank you!

The cool thing about the Personal Property Tax: As your vehicle ages and gets more miles on it, your taxes go down. It pays to own for a long time and to buy used (instead of new) in South Carolina. We bought one new vehicle in 2003 and the Personal Property Taxes on that vehicle in Greenville County that first year were nearly $900. I think they were around $90 for the same vehicle in Charleston County this year.

As for the Real Estate Taxes, if this will be your primary residence, there is a form that you will need to fill out to reduce your millage rate by 2-3% (which could save you a lot of $$. If it's not your primary residence, well...you pay more. Be sure to get that form filled out, if your primary residence is your home here, though. We forgot to get ours filled out and returned the first year we lived here and our property taxes were double what they should have been.

As a Realtor answering the question in general terms as you don't know where you might live, I would figure on 6/10 of one percent for taxes, so $500,000 house is $3000. This is on a personal residence only, investment property are taxed at much much higher rates. The $3000 is a high estimate too, and you can get a deduction if over 65 or disabled or both. On your car I just paid mine on a 2007 Hummer and they were less than $300 per year. Hope this helps !!

Holy moly, taxes would be $3000 on a $500k home?????? That is AWESOME!!!! Taxes in the northern states are ridiculous! My taxes now are $2700 per year and we paid $165k for our house.

David, we are looking at Summerville as it seems to be the best fit for us as far as ammenties, home prices, proximity to downtown, etc. We'd like to build new, so we are in the process of gathering information on builders.

Just out of curiousity, are there usually condos/apartments for rent in downtown Charleston? When we first move, depending on how quickly our current home sells, we may have to rent for 6 months or so and I cannot imagine myself stuck in a complex. Are there any websites that show listings for rentals?

Most Realtor web sites will allow you to search for rental property.
