Drilling and firing seems to be the most popular (most often suggested) that I've heard about. I tried it and didn't have a lot of luck with it.

Talking about a 15" diameter stump from a bradford pear that I cut down about two years ago.

Any other ideas for do-it-yourself stump removal ... or am I going to end up renting a stump grinder in the end?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can or want to give.

If it was me,,,,I would rent a stump grinder. A 2 year old stump shouldn't be that bad, or take that long.

I agree with Rick. Bradford Pear is a pretty darn hard wood.

Unfortunately I've been drawing the same conclusion.

I appreciate the input.

It depends on what type of soil you have there. I have dug out many stumps in sandy soil but it's near impossible in clay. I dug out a bunch of apple and pear stumps in my back yard a few years ago. All you need is a shovel a pick an axe and a long bar. I have at times dug all around a stump then washed the dirt off the roots about a foot or so below level grade and then cut everything with a chainsaw even the tap root. The stump just needs to be lifted out then.
