Having never lived in a neighborhood with an HOA, forgive me if this is a stupid question, but do HOA's mow your lawn? If its a matter of some do, some don't, I am right now looking primarily at Belle Hall. Thanks

They are all different.....get a copy of the HOA rules and guidelines and what they offer. Then study it. I actually had my lawyer review mine prior to purchase!

Usually in a housing development they do not mow your lawn, but they do fine you if you don't mow it.....

Condos and other multiocupancy units you pay HOA and Maintenance fees to pay for yard maintenance......

In most town home/condo communities the regime fee includes landscaping. Some Single Family Homes have landscaping included if they are on a golf course but I don't know of any in Belle Hall that the HOA includes lawn.

Depends what you are buying.

Single Family Home-No. Well not really anyway. Most will just yell at you and fine you for not doing it. Some will have someone do it if it gets bad enough but they will then send you a bill for the service and put a lien on your house if you don't pay it.

Condo/Apartment-Yes. The regime fee's are higher (usually) but they cover ALL exterior maintenance (landscaping, painting, roofing etc)

Having lived under several HOA's in a few states, including two in SC, a few guidelines:

1. HOA's can stifle this is my property and I can do as I wish types.

2. HOA's can keep a neighberhood to a higher standard then some individuals in it might. They can be your friend.

3. Generally in a single home HOA development, the HOA will only maintain common (shared) areas (pools, tennis courts, bike paths, entrance signs, ponds, etc) not ones individual lot/home.

4. Most anything one wants to do the the outside of their home will have to be approved by the HOA.

5. In legal battles, usually the HOA wins as one did sign and agree to the HOA Conenants so ignorance/disagreement of them is not a excuse.

Overall my advice is read and understand the HOA Covenants and if you do not like them, then move on down the road.
