Default school downtown - WHERE TO LIVE?

We are moving to the Charleston area this fall or next spring and plan to have our children at the private schools downtown. We have been looking at places to rent a house for 6 months to 1 year and find that there is not much available. We have seen (online) small houses in the historic district in Charleston (small being 3bdrm and under 2000 sq ft) and we have seen houses in Mt. P, James Island and Daniel Island that range from 3bdrm to 6bdrm and from 2000 sq ft to 5000 sq ft. For 1 or 2 years, we don't "need" a huge place but if we are going to have tons of traffic driving to different events/private schools anyway, I wonder if people feel it is too far to live out in Mt. P, DI? Also, what is the farthest out in Mt. P that makes sense? EG....how far does it really take from the IOP connector into Charleston? how long from beyond there? CAn anyone give insight on neighborhoods/communities that are reasonable commutes as well as tell us which ones would be too far out based on your experience(s). Thanks.

I live in Park West (that's about as far out in Mount Pleasant you can live) And to get downtown (meeting street area) it takes 15-45 minutes depending on day time etc. This is with the current construction that is going on expanding Hwy 17.

There are several other ways to get downtown and avoid Hwy 17 so you can get around pretty easily. I have lived her almost 7 years now. (moved from crazy Florida traffic and Northern VA, NJ traffic).

What private school are you considering? There are a few great neighborhoods near Porter Gaud (which is in West Ashley... not downtown)

Rentals are hard to find but if your are persistent you will find a place.
