I need some info guys. My fiance caught about a dozen blue crabs this morning. When we got home all but 3 were dead. They have been dead for about 2 hours. Are we SOL or are they still safe to eat?
Most people would tell you to trash the dead ones after this length of time.
Did he ice them down in a cooler after catching them? That's the usual way of keeping them alive for a few hours. It's unusual that they died so soon unless they were left in the sun/heat.
Not if the bone-head left them in the storage shed. I told him it was too hot in there. Thanks for the heads up. Last time he killed several by putting them in the fridge. I guess the best way is to keep them covered with a damp towel at room temp?
Thanks for the help!
putting them in the fridge is better than putting them on ice, ice can actually kill them once it melts into chlorinated water
crabbers keep crabs in "coolers" (not the coleman type, rooms they have made especially for this usually just with a couple of window unit a/c's on high to get it pretty cold) for hours, sometimes days still in the bushel baskets and they stay alive just fine... although some may appear dead, they usually are just in a hibernation they come out of pretty quickly at the feel of boiling water... lol
dead for a couple of hours in the heat? throw them away unless you want to spend an evening in the ER... unless they died in the last few minutes I wouldn't eat them, toxins from the "dead mans meat" run through their bodies pretty soon after they die and can get you quite sick
btw Capt. Sonny White is my Uncle... growing up I've been out there many a time on the river with him...
just a couple of articles on him, they've got him framed at the state museum too... he musta BS'd someone real well... lol
Thanks for the advice guys. We did throw they dead ones out. The rest were very good. Now he has to figure out how to keep the seasoning bag from busting open when he is boiling them. When I mentioned it he said "oh, its not supposed to do that?"

once u get the water boiling turn the heat down to where it keeps it at a steady smooth boil
add garlic and some of your favorite hot sauce into the water ¤¿¤
We steam them in beer and a little Old Bay seasoning they turn out really good.
